An Essay and a Poem About Private Health Care

Because there are many horror stories out there making people afraid of government-sponsored health care (even though we, human beings who need each other, have all joined ourselves to governments for our mutual protection!), I expect the following poem and my commeents to receive adverse attention and criticism, but I fele it is my duty to point out that well-financed insurance companies and drug companies are doing everything they can to make sure Americans will NOT choose government health care programs but will continue to be bankrupted and mistreated by private concerns.
Consider the concept of 'for profit' hospitals. Such hospitals should be against the law! In order to finction, such hospitals must provide the least possible health care for the greatest possible amount of money they are able to wrest from the victim. Yes--victim!
Health care should be a human right.
When a democractic government is responsible, limits result or the government is voted out. Nobody can 'vote out' all the health insurance companies who decide what procedures you will be able to get. Americans are suffering from overwork, lack of decent medical care, lack of security--anybody can lose their job. Lose their health care. Note that US government offcials LOVE their health care--- they aren't held hostage by insurance companies, the middle men who jack up prices.
I paid $7 a pill for thyroid medication when hospitalized in 2007. The same pill in the US cost 30 cents each (with my health insurance) ! But imagine my amazement when overseas i found out the pill cost me only 10 cents a pill! Without any health insurance! And to the average Swede, Dutch citizen, Norwegian, that pill is FREE! Thyroid medication for some people is necessary or death will result, yet in the hospital, I was forced to pay $7 per pill. I lost all my lifelong savings in three hos[ital stays despite 'health nsurance."
The following poem represents the cries of helpless Americans who cannot get health insurance. In a truly humane and human world, ALL people would receive free medical care.

Help! Murder! Police!
She stood beside her open door,
Trembling in her slippers.
They heard her scream, from time to time:
HELP! MURDER! POLICE!

She stood there all the gray day through,
turning the doorknob, looking into
her rented room ‘til the day was gone,
shouting out her simple song:
HELP! MURDER! POLICE!

Was she once loved? Who knows? Who cares?
For she’s outlived her usefulness!
Weak and bleak by her darkened door
--please turn your head -- her noise ignore --
HELP! MURDER! POLICE!

We’re all so busy, we’re hurrying on,
Averting our eyes, while the Clean-Up Squad
Comes to get some tidying done
With a government-issued gun.
And all around, a spreading flood:
Humanity’s epitaph writ in blood --
HELP! MURDER! POLICE!

Medical care for all human beings is a human right
that should not be denied, ignored or limited. The
greed and rapacity of for-profit hospitals, for-profit
drug companies, and for-profit health insurance companies
in the USA, which spends 15% of its GPA on 'health care' --what
a joke!-- those 'expenses' go to the middleman--the 'health insurance companies'
who decide what doctor you can have and what hospitakl you can go to.

This sad situation illustrates the capacity humans have to take advantage of
those who are vulnerable. The inevitable health needs of fellow human beings
has to be addressed humanely.

In sweden, 8% of the GPA goes to health care. My friend, George, had a major abdominal cancer operation. his cost? $11.50 a day. Yes, he paid taxes. So what?
We have proof the government sponsored system can work in Sweden. While taxes are high, nobody is without health insurance. While taxes are high, SAmericans actually pay more than the swedes because they have to pay health insurance companies that block their way to getting the same kind of medica; care that swedes get. rankly, the swedes live three to four years longer than Americans because they get excellent health care. Nobody loses their home over having a cancer operation. nobody has to decide whether they will eat or be able to afford their life-giving medicine.

I want my America back! The America where my doctor came to our house to help my mother. Where we got free shots at our school. Where after I spent almost a year and a half in the hospital, the hospital and doctors cancelled the bills after my dad had paid about 10%, because they were just glad they were able to save my life. My parents celebrated by going to the Bahaamas, and went on with their prosperous business in the TV industry. See if your doctors and hospitals will forgive a bill for 500 days in the hospial NOW! Today, they'd drive you to bankruptcy to get their pound of flesh.

The insurance copanies are big and powerful with YOUR moneyand they will make sure they will KEEP GETTING YOUR MONEY. What kind of spineless, corrupt, selfish congressmen and leaders do we have, anyway? How stupid can people get, to want to KEEP insurance companies that have shut out 46,000,000 Americans? This is NOT a 'welfare' or 'tax' problem. This is a SURVIVAL problem. Fix it, and people will have inheritances to pass on to their children. Don't fix it, and more suffering and hardhsip and evil in America is guaranteed, because homelessness, drug use, despair, anger and hatred of each other has its roots in the callous neglect and exploitation of our own.
I DO NOT KNOW OF HARDER-WORKING PEOPLE THAN AMERICANS.
I DO NOT KNOW OF ANY PEOPLE ON EARTH WHO HAVE BEEN EXPLOITED AND TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF MORE THAN HARD-WORKING AMERICANS.
I DO NOT KNOW OF ANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN BETRAYED, USED, SEDUCED AND LIED TO AS MUCH AS THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HAVE BEEN LIED TO, USED, BETRAYED AND SEDUCED -- BY A CORRUPT GOVERNMENT THAT HAS FAILED THEM, WHILE ENRICHING THEIR FRIENDS THE BANKERS, THE INSURANCE COMPANIES, THE DRUG COMPANIES, AND THEIR OWN FAT, GOVERNMENT-HEALTH-CARE-COVERED ASSES.

True humane action means provision of medical care to all,
regardless of ability to pay.

The argument that ‘government’ shouldn’t be responsible for our
health care needs is absurd, for our government represents us, and it is through our government that we derive all our other protections. Through good laws, and voting, we can protect the population from being exploited, voting in good men and voting out the bad.

Will Americans be fooled forever by their leaders?
Good God, they told you Oswald killed Kennedy.
They told you we had to win the war in Vietnam.
They told you we had to 'liberate' Iraq and fight the war on terror there.
Now it's Afghanistan, that money and blood trap that bankrupted the USSR.
Of course, companies (especially from Texas) will continue to get richer as they are paid to service the war effort. And bodies in boxes will keep quietly being returned to the weeping mothers and fathers and wives and children.
They will tell you anything, and they HAVE told you anything you'll swallow.
Americans love to rll over and take it.
Again and again.
Just remember:
The powers running your lives and destroying your future will tell you anything to quiet you...after all, they want your life's savings, one way or another (or do you think that YOU will avoid bankruptcy in your final illness and death? How? By cmmitting sicide? By jumping off a cliff?). yes, you wll be told anything that means more money in t-h-e-i-r pockets and more power over Y-o-u.

I never felt so moved to rouse you, o my people, since the early 60's when I marched against the Vietnam War, marched for civil rights, and fought for clean government at the local level. I did what I could with five young children. Since then I have lived in several technologically advanced foreign countries where citizens get five or six weeks of vacation, great health care, have almost no poor or homeless, where the air is clean and the food fresh and the people have hope for tomorrow. The countries I've lived in aren't violent like America.

But they don't have nearly as many desperate people.
There are more people in prison in my country, the United states, per capita, than in any other country on earth. Is that the America I once knew? NO! But WHY, WHY, WHY?

We are being drowned in drugs, subverted with porn, forced to work ourselves to death, unable to buy really fresh food without paying a fortune for nit, unable to afford dental care, let alone health insurance, and they changed the laws so you cannot even afford to file for bankruptcy! God in heaven!

BUT we stll have the VOTE--so long as we can make sure no computerized voting machines are being used. Do not think for a minute that paper ballots are safe, unless you watchdog the boxes (but at least, then you have a paper record).

Do not think for an instant that the same government who every November trots out new, fancy programs 'proving' Oswald killed Kennedy -- when the government was involved in the cover-up of who really did it -- don;t think that same government that inherited power by making sure Kennedy died will count the ballots correctly from electronic sources. You know better: look at how president Al Gore was removed from office simply by his rival having a brother in the key state. Thes epeople have the resources and the means and the motive to corrupt electronic voting machines, judges and states.

But just pretend you have the guts, America, to adequately protect your vote on a paper ballot that is unable to be 'lost' or 'cancelled.'

What then? You can vote out your corrupt and greedy politicans who vote against health care reforms and frighten you with their dire tales, while making sure you hear nothing but bad news about government health care programs overseas. Lies!

What do they deserve? They, who use government health care for themselves! Yes, that's what they enjoy! They do not have to worry about insurance companies!

The news programs, the media, will keep on blabbing about how horrible universal health care is. Billions of dollars are at stake. The media is bought-and-sold.

Solution?
Kick the senator or representative out, if they vote against your health and your future.

Yes, vote 'em out of office!

Remember:
You cannot vote out an insurance company board.
You cannot vote out the CEO’s of a drug company charging a fortune for
cancer drugs.
You cannot vote out your local hospital for overcharging everyone shamelessly.
I learned, living overseas, that health care CAN be supplied to all at a level of excellence.
People are being systematically terrified to not allow the government –THEIR government – to protect them.

Listen. Americans: if the government health bill has flaws, through votes and pressure you can make it better.

You can press for improvements to any bill that’s passed. Unless you let the insurance companies handle everything, once again.

We already know that they will charge you more for health care than anybody else on earth has to pay. And if you can't pay for it--too bad, too sad.

Greedy insurance companies and for-profit hospitals in America have made a business out of a human right -- the right for every hman to have ther best helath care possible.

Instead, greedy companies, hospitals and doctors have bankrupted millions of innocent people who paid them to protect and serve them.

I have lived in many countries, and shake my head at the fear-mongering going on. Powerful arguments, terrifying people that “Grandma will be euthanized” ignore the horrible fact that Grandma today is in desperate need of medical care and her families go bankrupt trying to provide it. I have lived overseas long enough to know that government health care programs can work. What America has now does not work, and is destroying family after family. My own mother refused to go to the hospital during her dying last days because she knew it would wipe out the inheritance she wished her children and loved ones to receive. Had she lived in Sweden or Canada, she would have received the care she should have had.
My mother suffered, and died, because of private health care’s excessive greed.
The following human rights should be universally recognized:
1) the right to free water and free food, to the level ensuring excellent health & cleanliness
2) the right to a free education to the degree desired
3) free medical care as a right for all
4) the right to own your own home …in other words, that
the government cannot tax your primary residence: it is always yours,
and cannot be taken from you for nonpayment of taxes; if the government can take away your home for non-payment of taxes, you are the serf of the government and you are not free
5) the right to accept or reject untested or controversial vaccines and medical treatments
6) the right to refuse to participate in war
7) all the freedoms listed in The Bill of Rights

I'm sure I'll get flack from this, but I'm horrified at the heartless neglect of American citizens, people who have worked hard all their lives, who cannot pass anything on to their children because it all went to pay $7 a pill for a pill that overseas costs 10 cents to foreigners and is FREE to those who have government-sponsored health care -- government, I repeat, can be voted out. God help us to move forward to provide health care security for all human beings. We once had dreams of freedom for all, homesteads for all, social security and health care for all. Health care should NEVER be a business! Wew're supposed to be human beings, not for-profit-take-advantage-of-your-neighbor-dark-animals. JVB
